The work

  • Write policy briefings and reports that are evidence-based and implementable. Your audience will range from ministers and special advisers to the general public.
  • Commission and manage research from our network of fellows and external experts; identify the right people for specific projects, brief them clearly, and edit their work.
  • Organise and contribute to policy roundtables and media interviews.
  • Build relationships and coalitions with people in government, regulators, industry, and civil society, to promote more effective science and health policy.
  • Manage timelines and work backwards from deadlines; coordinate contributors when needed and ensure high quality of research.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts for our science and health work.
  • Track what's working and log outcomes so we know if we're making a difference.

Who we are looking for

Quick note: Great candidates won’t always fit every requirement. We value drive, judgement, and fit above credentials.

  • Over five years’ experience in the UK civil service, a relevant regulator, relevant industry or consultancy, or relevant academic research.
  • You can move between science and health policy domains and prioritise working on issues that are tractable and impactful.
  • Understanding of the UK policy system – the machinery, the politics, what makes things happen.
  • You can synthesise evidence, handle basic statistics and cost/benefit analyses. Bonus if you are comfortable in Excel/R/Python.
  • Your writing is sharp, clear and convincing. You know how to write for senior people in a way that is concise and to the point.
  • You are organised and reliable. You produce good work to deadlines, even when it's tight.
  • You are good at spotting talent and managing fellows and collaborators – you know who to bring in for what, and how to get the best out of them.

What success looks like after a year

  • Government departments or regulators have implemented and/or are seriously considering proposals you've written.
  • You have built strong relationships with key players in at least one science/health domain.
  • You have successfully commissioned research that expanded our capacity and brought in fresh expertise.
  • We can point to the concrete impact you've had.
